Banana conservation a need of the hour

    Banana

Bananas are one of the major food crops widely cultivated in many countries. It belongs to the family Musaceae and genus Musa. Bananas globally rank fourth in the position after rice, wheat, and maize as food for human. They are grown in more than 130 countries worldwide.
Bananas are native to tropical southeastern Asia but are widely cultivated in the tropical region of other parts of the world. Banana is a herbaceous flowering plant arising from the underground rhizome.
Now the UN Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO) has warned that wild banana species are rapidly going extinct as Indian forests are destroyed while many farmers varieties are also disappearing from the fields. So it is very urgent to take a global effort to save the banana's gene pool
The majority of cultivated bananas arose from the Eumusa group of species. This section is the biggest in the genus and the most geographically widespread one. These species are being found throughout southeast Asia from India to the pacific islands and the section contains some 11 species. The most cultivars are derived from two species, Musa acuminata ( A genome) and Musa balbisiana ( B genome).

POOVAN

A survey conducted across the Kerala state shows its vast varietal wealth. This banana plant is very susceptible to diseases and hence requires more efforts to conserve the crop. The crop has unique features to withstand field conditions.
