                                                Diversity for life 

Many years back, that is in 2010, the above was the slogan of Biodiversity International to protect the plant species across the globe. This slogan is to aware stakeholders all over the world to conserve the genetic diversity to maintain and improve nutrition, livelihoods and the health of our planet-Earth. Farmers maintain more banana varieties than expected earlier. One of the things understood is that different banana variety is conserved at the community level in various regions. The conservation efforts depend on the number of factors like food security, the centre of diversity etc..Diversity of crops adapt to climate change and improve the resilience and productivity of farming systems in the respective regions. It is evident that plant genetic resources are important for food and agriculture and for ensuring the equitable sharing of benefits arising from their use.

Declaration of United Nation General Assembly in the International Year of Biodiversity states as follows
               -------  An opportunity for the biodiversity community to encourage people to

                                - Discover the biodiversity that surrounds us
                                - Realise its value, our connection to it and the consequences of its loss
                                - Act to save it.

Banana Banana is growing in more than 150 countries and having more than 1000types which subdivided into 50 groups. It is a staple food for many countries and has a greater value in nutritional aspects Kerala is bestowed with many varieties of Banana. Bananas globally rank fourth in the position after rice, wheat, and maize as food for human.
